The Late-time Radio Behavior of Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows: Testing the Standard Model

چکیده

Abstract We examine a sample of 21 gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow light curves at radio frequencies and compare them to the X-ray and/or optical properties afterglows predictions standard jet/fireball model. Our includes every Swift GRB with an curve indicating jet break published curve, as well several other targets observed or and/optical breaks. late-time decline each attempt fit analytical model based on equations data set. show that most events in our are incompatible light-curve behavior predicted by conventional theory. Many exhibit post-break afterglow. Only one this sample, any time, shows eventually expected ∼ t −2 , although two others it their millimeter curve. Several remain consistent if such began after observations. The alone does not, however, indicate whether can be modeling code. Indeed, well-fit GRBs may only appear so due lack multiwavelength data. While second source emission account for some anomalous behavior, tests is often not case unless main component simultaneously suppressed.

Radio scintillation of gamma-ray-burst afterglows ?

Stars twinkle to the eye through atmospheric turbulence, but planets, because of their larger angular size, do not. Similarly, scintillation due to the local interstellar medium will modulate the radio flux of gamma-ray-burst afterglows and may permit indirect measurements of their angular sizes. The amplitude of refractive scintillation is of order ten percent at ten gigahertz unless the sourc...

Late-time Radio Re-brightening of Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows: Evidence for Double-sided Jets

The central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is believed to eject double-sided ultra-relativistic jets. For an observed GRB, one of the twin jets should point toward us, and is responsible for the prompt gamma-ray and subsequent afterglow emission. We consider in this Letter the other receding jet, which will give rise to late-time radio re-brightening (RRB) when it becomes non-relativistic (N...

Gamma Ray burst afterglows in the infrared: a standard candle?

Context. Clustering in the luminosity of the afterglows of gamma-ray burst has been reported in the optical and X-ray. Aims. We investigate the possibility that a clustering in the luminosity of the afterglows of gamma-ray burst exists in near infrared (J, H, K bands). We use observations of events occurring from 1997 to the end of 2007. Methods. We correct the gamma-ray burst afterglow light c...

Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

Extended, fading emissions in multi-wavelength are observed following Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Recent broadband observational campaigns led by the Swift Observatory reveal rich features of these GRB afterglows. Here we review the latest observational progress and discuss the theoretical implications for understanding the central engine, composition, and geometric configuration of GRB jets, as w...

Gamma-Ray Burst Early Afterglows

The successful launch and operation of NASA’s Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer open a new era for the multi-wavelength study of the very early afterglow phase of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). GRB early afterglow information is essential to explore the unknown physical composition of GRB jets, the link between the prompt γ-ray emission and the afterglow emission, the GRB central engine activity, as wel...
